There is a specific kind of magic that happens when you step into a speakeasy. It’s the thrill of the hidden, the hushed tones, and the feeling that you’ve successfully escaped the mundane. But at ZLB23 – The Leela Palace Bengaluru’s Kyoto-style sanctuary – they’ve decided that simply being a world-class bar isn’t enough. They want to put on a show.
Enter The Theatre.
Conceived as a live, performance-led space, The Theatre transforms the traditional bar into a stage, illuminating each drink through narrative, artistry, and sensory immersion. This isn’t just a new menu or a corner table; it is a singular, 7-seat cocktail room where mixology is stripped of its utility and rebranded as performing art. If ZLB23 is the moody, jazz-filled novel we’ve all come to love, The Theatre is the avant-garde play unfolding in its secret annex.

Since its inception, ZLB23 has established itself as one of the country’s most influential bars, known for immersive storytelling and meticulous craftsmanship. Its global recognition is no accident, boasting a ranking of #31 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025 and the title of Best Bar in India 2024. The Theatre builds on this legacy, distilling its ethos into a focused, deliberate, and deeply immersive space.
Designed as a natural yet radical extension of ZLB23’s globally recognised philosophy, The Theatre introduces a format that is entirely singular within India’s bar landscape. It is a 7-seater cocktail room within the existing speakeasy, designed to function like a live performance where the guest becomes part of the unfolding scene.
Forget flipping through a leather-bound menu; at The Theatre, there is no conventional ordering. Instead, the experience is choreographed in structured acts, with each cocktail introduced as a character within a larger narrative. You are seated close – close enough to hear the snap of a bar spoon and feel every gesture, technique, and sound cue with intention.
The current production follows the natural rhythm of the palate, moving through history and flavor with cinematic precision:

The space itself feels like a love letter to historic opera houses. You’re surrounded by deep burgundy and oxblood velvets, rich wood paneling, and the warm glow of a statement chandelier. Yet, in a brilliant bit of design contrast, the bar itself is an exposed stainless steel surface. This theatrical shell allows the craft and mechanics of mixology to remain honest and unobstructed.
“ZLB23 has always been rooted in storytelling and precision,” says Naval Kukreti, Director of Food and Beverage at The Leela Palace Bengaluru. “With The Theatre, we wanted to create a space that treats mixology as a performing art…where every element is designed to be experienced rather than simply observed.”
Even the food plays a supporting role; guests are offered light accompaniments such as popcorn and select small bites, reinforcing the theatrical context without distracting from the main performance.
In a city like Bengaluru, where the craft cocktail scene is exploding, ZLB23 is betting on intentionality. By limiting the audience to just seven people and removing the menu-led ordering process, they have created a “cinematic, multi-sensorial performing art of mixology“.As Head Mixologist Rajib Mukherjee notes, the space is designed to evolve: “Menus will continue to change, with themes developing around technique, fermentation, and cultural storytelling”. This isn’t just about grabbing a drink; it’s about witnessing the cocktail move beyond craft and into the spotlight.
