The winners of the 90th Academy Awards were announced at the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles, at a star-studded ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel. His second outing as the host was generously sprinkled with shout-outs to the #TimesUp movement and inevitable jokes about last year’s Best Picture announcement.
The Shape of Water won in four of the thirteen categories it was nominated to, marking the first time since The Artist in 2011 that the winner of the Best Director award — Guillermo Del Toro — also took home the Oscar for Best Picture. Gary Oldman won the Best Actor for his portrayal of Sir Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour and Frances McDormand took home her second Oscar for Best Actress (after Fargo in 1996) for her formidable performance as a mother seeking justice for her daughter’s gruesome murder, thus staying true to the biggest Oscar trends we explored here.
History was also made as Jordan Peele became the first black person to win an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Get Out. Read on for the complete list of winners (highlighted).
