Every year, as spring transitions into summer, the fashion world gears up to attend or observe the ultimate fashion day of the year, the Met Gala. Whether you’re a fashion expert or just someone who loves breaking down and rating outfits, you know you eagerly wait to see who made headlines (for good reasons and bad). From Jared Leto’s Choupette moment in 2023, Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn look in 2022, to Blake Lively’s dress inspired by the Statue of Liberty, the Met is the talk of the town for weeks after the carpet is laid out, much like the Met Gala 2024 is set to be.
Each year, the theme aims to honour a style, a designer, or a look. This year, prepare to witness artificial intelligence, projections, and soundscapes adorn the carpet. Doesn’t sound very fit to fashion? We think so too, and we’re all set to watch fashion be reawakened through dormant fashion pieces and brought back to life with technology at the Met Gala 2024.
As per the Met, the theme for Met Monday is “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”, which “will explore notions of rebirth and renewal, using nature as a metaphor for the impermanence of fashion.” In line with the exhibit theme, the Met Gala 2024 dress code this year is, “The Garden of Time” celebrates fragile fashion pieces that can no longer be worn, featuring rare archival items. Imagine Elizabethan-era corsets and intricate, beautiful designs admired yet showcasing “inevitable decay.”
As usual, our Tuesday morning post the Met Monday frenzy, was spent gasping and drooling over all the looks on the carpet. From Swarovski, Thom Browne, all the way to a celebration of Indian designers, here’s our scoop on some of the most iconic Met looks.
An exquisite floor-length gown, crafted in a soft nude hue, features a butterfly-inspired bodice and an elegantly scalloped train that gracefully trails behind. Delicate butterflies, seemingly in motion, adorn her arms like ethereal opera gloves, their wings gently fluttering with a mesmerising, slow-moving rhythm.
TLM Loves: The details? The kinetic butterflies that flutter rhythmically? Mona Patel has understood the assignment and HOW!
A striking haute couture ensemble in vibrant blue, meticulously crafted by Maison Margiela Artisanal under the creative direction of John Galliano, evokes the majestic presence of a peacock amidst the opulent surroundings of a lavish garden. The custom-made dress, delicately bias-cut from organza and lamé, is complemented by a duchess satin corset adorned with bands of hand-painted metallic crin, shimmering iridescent organza, an aluminium drape and bow, and intricately hand-embroidered corsage details.
TLM Loves: The oomph factor of the outfit is so understated, but so impactful. Zendaya can simply carry off anything!
A unique creation from Sabyasachi, this mint green sari is a masterpiece of intricate hand embroidery, adorned with delicate floral motifs and dazzling embellishments. The garment, customised to perfection, boasts a remarkable 23-foot-long train embellished with silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones. A testament to artisanal craftsmanship, it required a total of 1965 man hours and the collaborative effort of approximately 163 skilled artisans to transform this vision into reality.
TLM Loves: Florals can be distracting, but this Sabyasachi saree is giving Bridgerton. The delicate fabric, the intricate details and the pastels are ticking off all boxes for the cottagecore aesthetic!
The supermodel looked stunning in her elegant gown, predominantly white with structured ruffles accented by black trim. The off-the-shoulder dress featured intricate three-dimensional yellow roses and lush green leaves. Gigi’s ensemble boasted a floor-sweeping train, a plunging neckline, and a corseted bodice fastened with ribbon ties at the back, exuding grace and sophistication.
TLM Loves: Who knew a gown as simple as this could be as impactful? It’s like a throwback to simpler gowns but with a facelift, almost reminding us of a classic Chanel gown.
The Swarovski ensembles pay homage to the garden’s essence, translating its elements—flowers, leaves, sunlight, and water—into couture masterpieces that capture the beauty and joy of nature.
Each model embodies a specific natural element: Kloss represents a flower, Yai symbolizes water, Hammam embodies the sun, and Engelbert personifies nature itself.
Kloss’ gown, adorned with pink floral embellishments, features over 180,000 rose crystals meticulously crafted by a team of seven artisans. Taking 225 hours to complete, its focal point is a jeweled corset adorned with garlands of pink flowers and petals, comprising 60,500 crystals and 75 jewels.
Yai’s water-inspired look consists of a silk tulle catsuit adorned with 98,000 sapphire and aquamarine crystals, creating the illusion of shimmering jewels directly on her skin.
Hammam’s sun-inspired ensemble comprises a cape inspired by Swarovski’s Gema collection and a satin column skirt adorned with gold crystals. The cape, crafted over 14 days, incorporates more than 3,000 crystals in six cuts and five hues, while the skirt dazzles with over 100,000 crystals.
Engelbert completes the group by drawing inspiration from nature itself. The creative director graced the Met Gala 2024 red carpet in a beaded emerald green satin gown inspired by Gustav Klimt’s artwork. The gown’s bustier features rows of green crystals, while the skirt is adorned with green jewels fading into a crystal mesh.
TLM Loves: Thousands and thousand of crystals can come off as blingy, but Swarovski made it otherwise. Pair it with the concept and the dress code, it’s basically perfect. Frankly, it’s almost like a classy collaboration of the Powerpuff girls and Spice girls!
Bad Bunny sported a daring ensemble by Maison Margiela, featuring a suit adorned with prominent contrast stitching and an oversized beret to complement the look. The exaggerated headwear, complete with an abstract tassel, mirrored the boldness of the open-stitched suit and, naturally, the iconic Tabi shoes. Not to be overlooked were the sunglasses, reminiscent of Pharrell’s renowned Tiffany shades, adding an extra touch of flair to the outfit.
TLM Loves: While we love the Maison Margiela ensemble, what brings it together for us is the oversized beret and the shades, so chic! Bad bunny continues to serve with his looks and we are here for it.
Chamberlain, captivated onlookers with a bold fashion choice—a bespoke brown lace dress designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. The strapless corseted bodice accentuated her silhouette, while intricate ivy-like lace tendrils encircled her arms, leading to a flowing tulle train. Describing her gothic-inspired attire as “decaying”, she highlighted the modern twist on the classic look. The dress boasted layers, a blend of various textiles, and satin whalebones for structure, juxtaposed with blocked knit and lace overlays, adding depth and transparency to the ensemble.
TLM Loves: You can almost never go wrong with a Jean Paul Gaultier piece, but the detailing on the arms? That’s got us sold! If anyone can carry off a goth-coded look this well, we’d pick Emma Chamberlain to do it. Addams family, who?
Jenner achieves a milestone by being the inaugural wearer of a McQueen fall 1999 creation for Givenchy haute couture. Referring to the garment as a “sleeping beauty” due to its 25-year hiatus, Jenner reveals its intricacies. Crafted from nude and black tulle, the dress boasts exquisite detailing, with over 100,000 black and brass beads and sequins meticulously hand-embroidered over the course of 500 hours. Beyond its labor-intensive construction, the dress features waist cutouts and a majestic sculptural collar and shoulders, elevating it to the status of a genuine masterpiece.
TLM Loves: Apart from the fact that this is the only time the world will get to see this 1999 archival creation on a model, the copper detailing on the sleeves and the structure of the dress, are so on point. It’s giving knight in shining armour, but it’s Kendall in shining armour.
For her Met Gala 2024 debut, Tyla chose a Balmain gown made to look like sand using actual sand on fabric moulded to her body, to represent “the sands of time”.
TLM Loves: The structure, the makeup, the way Tyla carries this off, and moreover, the sand detailing even on her body, has got not just us, but everyone drooling over this outfit. We’re not looking for any Water if this desert-like look is on the cards.
Reed arrived in a patterned silk pantsuit, part of her ‘Shadow Dance’ collection. The look featured a three-dimensional corset, a draped train and a halo lined with black arrows, this is giving MET GALA and we are here for it.
TLM Loves: When you think Met Gala, you think OTT Renaissance like outfits. This Harris Reed piece is like a painting come to life. If we’re talking about Reawakening Fashion, then this checks our boxes for sure.
